Your Best Life is Not Now

Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:20–34
Read 1 Corinthians 1:1-38
1. Focusing on verses 20-28, why is Jesus called the “first fruits”? Can you explain how we all “died in Adam” and why that means that those who are in Christ must rise as He did?
2. Focusing on verses 30-34, what is the connection between the promise of the resurrection to come and the way Paul lived his life, i.e., why did he not subscribe to the life-philosophy “eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die” and say that we are to be pitied above all people if there is no resurrection?
3. The promise of the resurrection is meant to free us from being enslaved to the death-grip of this life. It is meant to empower a peace- and hope-fueled love for the Lord and others because we know we have a sure and eternal future.
Reflect on your life and consider whether there are areas where a “live for this life above all” mentality might be dominating you, or where anxiety about this world may be eroding your peace. Ask the Lord to help you enjoy and be assured of the promise of resurrection and to be empowered by this promise to live for Him and others more joyfully and faithfully.
