Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:8–13
This Sunday we considered 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 and the temporary nature and need for spiritual gifts until the “perfect” comes.
Read 1 Corinthians chapter 13 and pay special attention to verses 8-13.
1. Starting in verse 8, Paul begins to exalt love over the spiritual gifts because it will last forever. In verse 13, he explains how love’s value is the greatest in the universe. How do these truths bolster Paul’s case in this chapter that love should be the motive and purpose of spiritual gifts?
2. Notice Paul describes the gifts as partial (verse 8) and present only until the perfect comes (verse 10). In verse 11 he uses childhood as a metaphor for the temporary need for gifts. Finally, in verse 12 he describes the perfection to come as when we will see Jesus “face to face” and “fully know.” How do these truths argue for the current need and provision of spiritual gifts?
3. Please continue to ask God to pour upon our church family the gifts we need to be all God wants for us in this season. Ask Him as well to stir up gifts that we may have but may not be using. Also ask Him to help us understand and steward the gifts we have in our body.
